Underwater excavations

Underwater excavation in the Dor lagoon:

The ancient city of Dor was built on a promontory jutting into the sea, with small bays bordering it on the north and south. These bays served in the past as harbours, as they were protected by a chain of islands acting as a natural breakwater. Underwater surveys and excavations are conducted in these waters, alongside the land excavations. The research of the various port installations was carried out by the late Prof. Avner Raban of Haifa University, while the southern bay, abundant with shipwrecks, is being researched by Dr. Yaacov Cahanov of the same university, with the cooperation of Dr. Shelly Wachsman of Texas A&M University and former member of the Kibbutz Kurt Raveh, and with the participation of many students and volunteers. Artifacts retrieved from the bottom of the sea may be viewed in the museum, including guns and other armament of the Napoleonic army, discarded here after the great debacle off Acre in 1799.
